Starlab
The Starlab Planetarium, though portable, is quite large. It requires a minimum ceiling height of 10.5 feet, and it needs a minimum of 20 by 23 feet of floor space. A school gym is ideal, but other spaces will also work well. Unfortunately, the dome cannot be set up outdoors: it would blow away in a light wind! An electrical outlet is required, and it is helpful (though not necessary) if the space can be made dark. If you have more than about 35 people in your group, or 40 if it will be mostly children, you will need to schedule more than one session, at least one hour and fifteen minutes apart.
The reason for that last phrase, ‘at least one hour and fifteen minutes apart’, is because it takes at least half an hour for human eyes to adjust from daylight to the dark they’ll experience in the planetarium dome. In addition, we do at least two different activities inside; and, before we go inside, an introduction to what to expect. Finally, if more than one group is scheduled, there needs to be a transition time for one group to leave before another arrives.
Star Parties
Star Parties require clear, dark skies. It is best if the moon is far from full. Party participants should have proper clothing and bug repellent, if applicable. Dressing for the weather, preferably in layers, is also recommended. Having something to sit on, or to lie down one, is also helpful.
Book Presentations
Any room with seating will work, but a table and some space in the front will be required to set up equipment (three telescopes on tripods, several pairs of binoculars, etc). A projection screen in front will also be helpful, but not necessary.
